Today, Rocky Mountain Horses are known as gaited saddle horses, however, in the not so distant past, Mountain Horses were all purpose horses. They were used on small farms to plow the fields, pull logs out of the woods to heat the home, and as transportation in the rugged mountains of Eastern Kentucky.
We selected our horses for their using qualities. We were looking for mellow temperaments, stout conformation, and of course, the signature Rocky gait. We use our horses for trail riding, ponying young stock, horse packing, pulling logs, plowing and cultivating our garden. All of our horses need to pull their own weight, so to speak. All of our breeding stock need to prove that they are capable workers. Our farm stallion pulls out all of our wood for heating our home and is teamed with our youngsters as their gentle professor of driving. Our head mare has ponied dozens of horses we have trained or re-started. She has horse packed into the backcountry of Idaho and is unstoppable when drawing a log. Any horses that can’t do this are not kept around for breeding. As a result, we have some fine, young stock that are so easy to work with.
